It's that time of the year. The day is long and hot. As usual, you started the day with your regular hygiene routine. Showered, brushed your teeth, underarm deodorant, you are ready to go. Why ball hygiene matters?
For most guys, we start our day just as described above. But the problem is, sometimes that's just not enough, especially during summer. The sun is out, guns out and that means the buns are out as well. (if you know what I mean)
You want to make sure you aren't sticking a spoiled hot dog between those buns. This means that splashing some soap and water down there isn't going to cut it anymore. You got to step up your ball game, especially for those summer nights during the 4th quarter. It's time for you to implement daily ball focused hygiene practices that will ensure you are ready for the clutch moments.
Why do balls smell?
One of the main causes of smelly balls is excessive sweat. It is normal to sweat down there, but sometimes it can get out of control especially during a workout or if you live in a humid climate. The groin area has sweat glands called the Apocrine glands. Apocrine glands are native to highly active, hot, moisture-prone areas of the body such as the armpit and groin. Again, some sweat in this area is normal, but some guys suffer from a condition called hyperhidrosis.
Hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating, throughout the body or in certain areas of the body that are prone to sweating such as armpits, palms, feet and groin.
When you suffer from hyperhidrosis, the nerves responsible for triggering the apocrine glands are overactive. This causes the gland to produce more sweat than needed to keep your body cool.
The odor you experience coming from your balls happens when bacteria that live on the skin digest this sweat into very odor rich fatty acids called thioalcohols — compounds that smell like sulfur, onions or raw meat.
Now that you have a crash course into why you have smell balls, let's talk about how to prevent it.
1. Shower more often
This may seem self-explanatory but it probably the most effective method to prevent constant jock stink. Normally, every time you shower, you remove all the odor-causing sweat and bacteria from your skin. The more you shower, the less time you give sweat and bacteria to build upon your skin. It is the first change you should try before using products to supplement your routine. Don't forget to dry out really well, because you don't want to leave moisture in that area as that can contribute to excess bacteria regrowth.
2. Shave more often
Everybody doesn't have time to shower 2-3 times a day so it's important to maximize your shower. Clearing the jungle will make it easier to thoroughly wash and clean your groin area. It will also make it harder for bacteria to build up and will help keep that area cooler, which will prevent excess sweating.
3. Wear breathable underwear
Tight underwear or pants can trigger excess groin sweat. Fabrics that don't breathe can also trigger a waterfall of sweat. Consuming caffeine and alcohol can also increase perspiration as apart of the body's effort to balance its fluid levels.
4. Lose some weight
Some people are going to find this to be harsh advice, but we keep it real here. Sweating can be intensified by excess sweat glands from the excess skin area. If you are overweight, hop on a good nutrition and workout plan to help your ball game.
5. Preserve your balls
This is where you want to apply the cherry on top of the banana split with some jock products. Namely, you are going to want some kind of deodorant.
